Description | Why Systems Thinking is Essential for Modern Software Delivery
Small design bugs often grow into big problems later. Testers have a unique view of how these tiny issues connect across systems. And this talk explores how systems thinking helps teams and testers uncover real constraints in delivery flow and how Agile practices can help them with this analysis. Our teams were trapped in a cycle of addressing local problems while missing the bigger picture. Despite catching more problems and finding solutions during retrospectives, we still suffered same issues. We fixed dozens of small problems only to discover they were symptoms of deeper problems that cost us a lot of time of rework. This sparked our realization: we needed to stop treating problems as isolated incidents and start understanding the systems creating them. We discovered causal loop diagrams and system archetypes as tools to visualize these relationships. By applying systems thinking to our approach, we transformed our processes. Using archetype "success to the successful" we discovered that our new tool implementation is still dependent on our legacy one. And only full decommission of an old tool can unlock our new implementation. We will present how causal loop diagrams and system archetypes might help to visualize and analyze systems to improve our strategies towards different challenges. It will be a practical exploration of system thinking where we gonna share stories from our experience. We'll encourage our audience to look at problems from a broader perspective and make them aware of how local improvements can be harmful in the long term.

BIO: Received M. Sc. degree in CS in 2008, and Ph.D. degree in CS in 2015 from Warsaw University of Technology, Poland. From 2006 to 2018 he was with Transition Technologies S.A. in Warsaw, working as a Developer, Software Architect and Scrum Master. From 2018 he was with Sonova working as a Software Engineer and since 2019 he has been working at Google, currently as a Senior Software Engineer. His research interests include machine learning and software engineering.
