Testing in COVID-19 era

Short Description of presentation

COVID-19 era is on us. It has impacted us all. Besides health risk it has made an impact on a way how we perform our job. Majority of us was shifted into “work from home” mode. Do you remember its starting days? Overloaded internet links, timeouting connections to your lab equipment, difficulties to communicate with lab admins, coworkers …

How to develop software, how to test it in such circumstances?

But wait a minute – aren’t we all engineers? That always meant “we can survive in any technical constraints”. That has triggered my mind. How to overcome those networking issues. What if I would have all the network needed for my software development locally?

This talk is a story how COVID-19 forced me to build better development/testing/CI environment founded on virtualization with vagrant and device simulators. Conclusions from the talk are more generic than my private case and I hope will stimulate you for out of the box thinking. There are benefits of virtualization and simulators that could speed up your development and improve your software quality.

Short Biographical Note of Speaker

Grzegorz graduated at AGH University of Science and Technology Cracow with M.Sc. thesis on building a software language compiler. That included analysis of language constructs used in a rare language called Oberon. From that time, analytical thinking about software is “deep in his heart”. During 27 years of professional experience he went from CAD systems into the telecom industry; from C/C++ via Perl to Python; from being a software engineer, a configuration manager, a project lead to a software architect and a Python trainer, where he is today. He works in telecom tests automation, building Python libraries. A main architect of As a Python trainer, he gives Nokia internal trainings. He helps others by consulting their code, conducting workshops and building communities around that software. He also coaches how to discuss about code from a broader view.
